Six months after surviving Shepard's suicide mission, Kasumi Goto resumes her activities as a master thief, marketing her unique abilities to the highest bidder. She eventually finds herself at Omega, a shady place she frequents to find those interested in her services.

Upon stumbling into one of Omega's many bars, she overhears a conversation between a volus and a vorcha. She is surprised and genuinely intrigued by this unusual pair, and pays attention to their conversation. It turns out they were planning on stealing from no one other than Cerberus itself, right under the nose of the Illusive Man. Kasumi's previous experience with Cerberus almost killed her and she was not compensated enough for it.

Realizing the two were planning something big, she slowly approached them, saying she wanted in. The volus instantly recognized her and, gasping for air, turned eagerly towards the vorcha, who was already rubbing his hands together. The two agreed and presented themselves:

The vorcha is known as “H3$HT0K”, a brilliant one-of-his-kind who enrolled in a prestigious university at the Citadel, surprising his peers by taking a computer science and space technology double degree programme. Even though he actually passed with flying colours, the poor vorcha faced nothing but discrimination when he entered the work force. Engineering firms would turn him away simply because he's a “vorcha” and “too stupid” for the job. Through constructive volition, H3$HT0K turned to a life of crime: breaking into high-security networks and siphoning credits from unsuspecting banks. It wasn't long until he became a notorious freelancing "securities expert", often operating in Omega alongside the Blood Pack mercenary group. “Who's the stupid one now?’”, he would hiss vindictively after every job well done.

The volus' name is Bin'Gbang, ex-accountant of legendary Citadel businessman Barla Von. Years of working under his corporate thumb showed him that with money came power. Many would describe this as the beginning of Bin'Gbang's capitalistic megalomania. After learning everything he could from him, Bin'Gbang moved from system to system, employing his expertise with networking to make many friends along the way… as well as many enemies. He always had a keen eye for hidden talent, and earned many a fortune by bringing unexpected groups together. But of course, when the time called for it, Bin'Gbang would never be afraid to be at the forefront of the battle. His resume may say "Proficient in word processing programs", but in reality, the volus is a master hacker of all things tech.

The two eventually met while toying with Omega's security network and eventually, from rivals, became friends that operated at high efficacy when combining their unique abilities, using their superior intellect, and only using the best equipment that credits could buy. They soon learned that if they wanted to get their hands in the juiciest credits, they needed to strike big: and Cerberus would be the perfect opportunity to not only make a lot of cash, but also deliver a blow to one of the most daunting and dangerous human organizations in the Milky Way. Their specific target this time was an isolated Cerberus base that contained valuable information on something called "Project Phoenix" (the details of which they had yet uncover) but surely it was something that would net them a huge amount of credits if sold to the right buyer.

H3$HT0K and Bin'Gbang managed to get the key entry into that specific Cerberus Network and Kasumi could provide the right means to infiltrate the base and acquire the data.

Much to Kasumi's annoyance the operation was called:
